Our first stop in Scotland was Arrochar in the Highlands. A picturesque village located in Argyll and Bute near the head of Loch Long, I fell in love with the area as soon as I laid eyes on it. The towering mountains, rushing rivers, lush flora and abundant fauna, I can see why many people love coming up here for a getaway. We stayed in a beautiful AirBnb with the most dramatic views, plenty of hiking trails nearby for ourselves and the dogs, and delicious restaurants right down the road.

Our first meal there was dinner at Ben Arthur’s Bothy, a charming pub with views of the loch. I enjoyed a delicious meal of fish n chips with a pint of Tennent’s. After driving around four hours from our start in Newcastle from our departure from the ferry, it was the perfect comfort meal to end the evening. I woke up to the most amazing view, and after enjoying my morning coffee in the hot tub, we all left to start our first hike, which offered stunning views of the loch. After a well deserved moment of relaxation post-hike, we made our way down to The Slanj for dinner in Tarbet. This restaurant is located in an old church, and while the outside pays tribute to history, the inside is fresh and modern. This is where I had the wonderful experience of their steak pie, my first ever pie in Scotland. Tender, perfectly-cooked steak with crispy puff pastry, savory mashed potatoes and sublime steamed vegetables. The staff were so professional and kind, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to dine there.

Throughout our two weeks there, we hiked around the Highlands, exploring the beautiful trails, villages, and enjoying some of the most delicious meals I’ve ever had. Scottish food is a bit heartier than I’m used to, but it’s perfect for cooler days filled with adventures along the way. We also celebrated my father’s birthday and baked him this little cake, it feels good to do things for the people you love.
Another unforgettable meal was at The Village Inn. Such a lovely, quiet gem tucked away near Dumbarton. I indulged in their bangers and mash (a UK classic) it was notably one of the best I’ve had in years. I look forward to returning there.

If you enjoy stunning hikes (ranging from easy walks to challenging summits), kind people, and beautiful villages, I highly recommend taking the time to visit Arrochar. Scotland is such a magical place, where one forgets their troubles and basks in the peace nature provides.

All my love,
Miranda Renée
